How To Optimize Your Website For Google’s New Page Experience Update

By blueribbon
As Google is rolling out its new page experience update in mid-June 2021, optimizing your website to make it user-friendly is crucial, now more than ever! The page experience update is a combination of several site performance metrics that significantly affects a website’s ranking. Its various contributing factors include core web vitals, mobile-friendliness, safe browsing, HTTPS, and no intrusive interstitial. These metrics enable you to measure how well users can interact with your web page. Optimizing your website in accordance with the new standards can enhance your web’s performance and further help the site evolve towards user expectations on mobile. This will subsequently contribute to increasing your reach and engagement on the web as users can conveniently browse through your website with less friction.  In this article, let’s explore the various contributing factors of page experience update and learn how to optimize your site to render a smooth user experience.

Core Factors of Page Experience Update

Some of the signals included in the new page experience update are already measured by Google, while some of them will be completely new. First, let’s take a look at the existing signals.
  • Mobile Friendliness: It measures your web page’s responsiveness to mobile devices. Over 51% of overall internet traffic consists of mobile users. Thus, Google aims to give them the best possible browsing experience.
  • Safe Browsing: It checks whether your web page contains any malware or deceptive content like social engineering.
  • HTTPS: This metric analyzes if your site’s connection is secured via HTTPS, which is an encrypted network protocol and secure alternative to HTTP.
  • No Intrusive Interstitial: Interstitials can be disruptive and they can make your site’s content difficult to access. This signal helps you remove any ad that appears while the page is downloading, ensuring that the main content is easily accessible to the user and boosting their overall experience.
The new components of the page experience update will be launched in mid-June this year. It includes the core web vitals which can be further divided into the following:
  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): This metric is used to analyze a web page’s loading time. According to Google’s standards, your LCP should be under 2.5 seconds to maintain a credible user experience.
  • First Input Delay (FID): It tracks the time from when a user first interacts with your web page (click a link, tap on a button, etc.) to when the page actually responds. Google states that a good FID is less than 100 milliseconds, while a poor FID is anything over 300 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): It measures the visual stability of your site’s content. Make sure to have a CLS score below 0.1 to establish a good user experience. Anything over 0.25 can be unsatisfactory for your website visitors.
Now that we have learned about the various components of Google’s new page experience update, let’s delve deeper and learn how to optimize your website in accordance with Google’s new update.

Optimizing Your Website For Google’s New Page Experience Update

Make Your Website Mobile Friendly Mobile friendliness is a major contributing factor in determining your website’s ranking. Google initiated a shift to mobile-first indexing for all sites in September 2020. You can check whether your website is responsive or not using Google’s mobile-friendly test. It will show all the page loading issues with your website and you can fix them as suggested by the tool.  If you are running your site on an outdated theme or using a site builder that isn't optimized for mobile, it is high time to consider migrating your website to a mobile-friendly web builder.  Improve Your Site Speed Loading time is one of the key elements of the Core Web Vitals. The lesser time it takes for a page to load, the better is the user experience. According to Google, when the load time goes from one second to three seconds, the probability of user bouncing increases by 32%. When it further increases to six seconds, your bounce rate can increase by 106%.  To increase your site’s speed, first, check the time taken by your website to load completely. You can check the same by entering your domain URL in Google's PageSpeed Insights.  In addition, PageSpeed Insights can help you determine whether your website passes the Core Web Vitals assessment test. It further displays a set of opportunities to improve your site loading speed. Boost Your Site Security For webmasters to offer the best possible experience to their users they must safeguard users’ online information. Poor website security can have a direct negative impact on their SEO rankings. Therefore, make sure your website has cybersecurity features. You can analyze your Google Search Console to check if your site has any security issues. Fix these problems to improve your site’s security and build trust amongst users. Use Heatmaps to Find Usability Issues With the help of heatmaps, you can analyze your users’ activities. It includes:
  • what your visitors browse on your web pages,
  • where they are navigating to, and
  • where they are getting stuck.
These insights can assist you in improving your web design. Thus, enabling you to enhance the overall page experience.  Reduce Bounce Rates Although bounce rate is not one of the core components of the Page Experience Update, however, this metric indicates whether or not your web page provides value to your visitors. High bounce rates signal that the page has little value in the context of a searcher's query.  A bounce rate of 26-40% is generally considered good. In case your bounce rate is more than 40%, you need to work on it to make users stick around longer. Remove Intrusive Interstitial Users generally visit your website because they think you can help them solve their problems or answer their queries. Therefore, it becomes your responsibility to help them access the content on your site easily. If you visually obscure the content with interstitials or ads, it provides a poor experience to users.  Remove any ad that appears before the main content fully loads. Make sure the first thing visitors see as soon as they land on your website is the page’s primary content and not a plea for them to sign up or download anything before they have even read your article or browsed through your products. This will give value to your visitors and can further help you increase engagements. Conclusion There are dozens of variables that can contribute to a site’s SEO rank and help provide a great digital experience. Marketers can use countless tips, tricks, and best practices to improve their sites’ SEO performance. However, the most relevant content or site will always rank higher as Google wants to provide users with the best experience possible. The aforementioned tips will surely help you optimize your website for the new algorithm update.
